Back in 2018, I visited the lovely town of Olinda in northern Brazil. It’s popular with tourists, mostly Brazilian, and when my wife and I were admiring the town’s facades, a man walked from around the corner and started talking to us, assuming we were Brazilian tourists. He was a tour guide and wanted to sell his services, and one of the very first things he said was “Oh, if only the Dutch had stayed, Brazil would be so much better off, today”.

Há exatos 345 anos, no dia 20 de dezembro de 1649, morria na Alemanha o conde Maurício de Nassau, governador do chamado Brasil Holandês entre 1637 e 1644. Nassau é uma das figuras mais controversas da historiografia brasileira, e na data de sua morte chega ao público o projeto Pecados Abaixo do Equador, realizado em parceria pela Marco Zero, pela plataforma Placecloud e pelo espaço de exposição holandês Nest, com apoio da Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (Unicap).

The Creative Industries Fund NL and Nieuwe Instituut invite you to join the Hidden (Hi)stories symposium on Friday November 30. This afternoon symposium showcases a series of projects that explore hidden stories and histories related to the Dutch colonial past and its postcolonial present through design. Through presentations and panel discussions, designers, spatial practitioners, architects, researchers and artists from different geographies around the world will consider their approaches in making these hidden histories tangible, accessible, and discussable.

The Creative Industries Fund NL has selected 13 projects in the Open Call Hidden (Hi)stories. The open call, a collaboration with the Nieuwe Instituut, focuses on unlocking hidden stories through design. The selected projects will participate in meetings and knowledge sessions at the Nieuwe Instituut starting in January 2024 and will form a working group together within the Tool Shed programme.
